山梨県出身。小中高の同級生である3人によって、2000年12月6日に結成。 2003年にデビューし、以降「3月9日」「粉雪」をはじめとする世代を超えて聴き歌い継がれる名曲をリリース。 2005年3月9日、2ndアルバム「ether[エーテル]」のリリース日に、初の武道館公演を行う。 2006年、地元山梨で行われた「SUMMER LIVE “STAND BY ME”」は、日本航空学園の滑走路にて約3万人を動員し行われ、 地元はもちろんのこと、全国からファンが駆けつけ社会現象とも言えるライブとなった。同年には初の横浜アリーナ、 2009年にはさいたまスーパーアリーナでのライブを成功させるなど、名実ともにトップアーティストとして活躍。 2012年2月1日、活動休止を発表。 2025年12月6日、活動再開を宣言し、15年ぶりとなる全国ツアー「レミオロメン Reunion Tour 2026」の開催を発表。
