James Hype’s career was built in the booth, long before it reached the main stage. Raised on the Wirral in north-west England, he got his first decks, second-hand vinyl turntables, at 15. By 18, he was handing out mix CDs around Liverpool and talking his way into club sets. He later moved to London with £50 in his pocket. Years spent playing six nights a week turned repetition into a signature: fast, technical mixing across four decks, using live edits, mashups and loops to treat the equipment
